Austin Romero

Faro District, Portugal

I’m Austin, founder of The Huachuma Project, a small retreat centre in the Western Algarve, Portugal. My work focuses on preparation, self-inquiry and integration around significant personal and retreat experiences. I work primarily in person through THP, alongside online preparation and integration sessions by appointment. My approach is direct and grounded. I don’t see my role as giving people answers or telling them what their experience means. I try to offer a clear, supportive setting where people can explore what is coming up for them and make their own sense of it.

About

My relationship with plant medicine began in 2015 through my own personal experiences and later developed through study and time spent working within retreat environments in Peru, the UK and Europe.

I began working with Kambo in 2017, and since 2018 my main focus has been Huachuma (San Pedro), alongside my experience with Ayahuasca.

Over the years, my own approach has shifted away from placing importance on the intensity of an experience and towards preparation, responsibility and integration.

That eventually led to the creation of The Huachuma Project in Portugal, where I now lead small-group retreats and remain involved with participants before, during and after their time with us.

How I work with clients

I start by getting to know the person I am working with: why they are seeking support, what has brought them to this point and what they hope to explore.

I prefer open conversation rather than applying the same structure to everyone.

I listen, ask questions and offer my perspective where I think it may be useful, while leaving the person free to understand their experience in their own way.

I do not assume that every difficult experience needs to be solved or that every insight needs to be acted on immediately.

I work with adults aged 18+ in person at The Huachuma Project and online by appointment.

Treatment approach

My approach is based on what I have learned through my own experiences and years of working with people in retreat settings.

Preparation is important because expectations, personal circumstances and the reasons someone is seeking this kind of experience can all influence how they approach it.

During the work itself, I try not to over-direct or impose an interpretation. I stay present, pay attention to what is happening and offer support when it is wanted or needed.

Integration is a major part of how I work.

After a significant experience, I encourage people to take time before drawing conclusions. We can look at what came up, what feels meaningful, what may simply need more time, and whether there is anything they want to approach differently in everyday life.

I do not promise transformation, healing or particular outcomes. My role is to offer preparation, perspective, clear boundaries and ongoing support while people make their own sense of their experience.
