About this retreat
The Huachuma Project offers small-group Huachuma (San Pedro) retreats in a secluded off-grid valley in the Western Algarve, Southern Portugal.
Our three-night retreats have been developed as an intentional space for people who feel genuinely drawn to exploring Huachuma through self-inquiry, reflection and personal experience. We work exclusively with Huachuma and intentionally keep our groups small, with a maximum of 12 participants, allowing the retreat to remain personal and well supported throughout.
The retreat takes place on land that has been developed specifically around this work. Ceremonies are held in our dedicated ceremony yurt, with accommodation, communal spaces and the surrounding natural environment forming part of the wider retreat setting.
We do not approach Huachuma as a recreational experience, a quick fix or a treatment for medical or mental health conditions. No particular experience or outcome can be predicted. People may encounter periods of connection, insight or enjoyment, as well as challenging emotions, physical discomfort, tiredness or unexpected thoughts and memories.
Our role as facilitators is not to tell participants what their experience means or direct them towards a particular conclusion. We aim to provide a grounded, respectful and supportive environment in which each person can engage with their own experience at their own pace.
Preparation begins before arrival, support remains available throughout the retreat, and participants can continue to access integration support after returning home.
Suitability First
Every retreat at The Huachuma Project begins with a conversation.
We do not offer instant booking and we do not assume that everybody who enquires should attend. Before confirming a place, we speak with each prospective participant about why they are considering Huachuma, their current circumstances, relevant physical and mental health history, prescribed medication, previous psychedelic experience, expectations and any concerns they may have.
This process is intended to help both the participant and our team consider whether attending is appropriate at that particular time.
Certain medical or psychiatric circumstances may make participation inappropriate or require further professional advice. We do not advise participants to discontinue or alter prescribed medication in order to attend a retreat. Any changes to prescribed treatment should be discussed with the healthcare professional responsible for that treatment.
We would rather decline or postpone a booking when we have concerns than encourage somebody to participate when the retreat does not appear suitable for their circumstances.
Participants are also encouraged to use the initial conversation to ask us questions about the medicine, facilitation, screening process, ceremonies, accommodation, preparation and support available before deciding whether The Huachuma Project feels right for them.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival, Welcome & Preparation
Guests arrive during the afternoon and have time to settle into their accommodation and become familiar with the retreat space.
We share an evening meal together followed by an opening circle. This provides an opportunity to meet the group, talk through the days ahead, discuss intentions and ask any final questions before the first ceremony.
The first evening is intentionally relaxed, allowing people time to arrive physically and mentally rather than moving immediately into ceremony.
Day 2 – First Huachuma Ceremony
The first Huachuma ceremony takes place in our dedicated ceremony yurt.
The day is intentionally kept spacious. Participants remain within the supported ceremonial environment while the facilitation team is present throughout the experience.
Once the ceremony has naturally come to a close, the group comes back together for food and a quieter evening, with time to rest and reflect on the day.
Day 3 – Second Huachuma Ceremony
The second ceremony takes place the following day.
Rather than attempting to recreate or build upon the previous experience, participants are encouraged to approach each ceremony with openness and allow it to unfold on its own terms.
Again, the full day is kept free from unnecessary activities or scheduling so that there is time for the ceremony itself, rest, food, conversation and personal reflection.
Day 4 – Integration & Departure
The final morning is dedicated to integration, reflection and group sharing.
There is time to talk through the retreat, consider what participants may want to carry forward into everyday life and discuss any questions that have emerged over the previous days.
After breakfast and the closing of the retreat, guests begin their journey home.
Integration does not necessarily end when the retreat does. Participants are welcome to remain in contact with The Huachuma Project and access our ongoing integration support as they continue making sense of their experience in the weeks, months or years that follow.

Accommodations
The Huachuma Project is located in a secluded off-grid valley in the Western Algarve, surrounded by nature and away from busy tourist areas. The retreat has been developed gradually as a dedicated space for this work, combining simple, comfortable accommodation with plenty of outdoor space to rest and spend time between ceremonies.
Shared accommodation is included in the retreat price. Our shared, gender-separated rooms are located within the main house, close to the communal areas where meals are served and guests naturally gather throughout the retreat. There are two shared rooms, each accommodating up to four guests, with nearby bathroom and hot shower facilities.
For those who prefer more privacy, two private accommodation options are available as upgrades, subject to availability.
Our private hillside yurts are positioned slightly away from the main house and overlook the surrounding valley. Each includes comfortable sleeping accommodation, private outdoor seating, a dining area, small gas stove and its own compost toilet. Hot shower facilities are located nearby and shared with other retreat guests.
Our private guest house offers the greatest level of privacy and the conveniences of a conventional home. It includes a private bedroom, bathroom with flush toilet and shower, fully equipped kitchen and living area. This can be particularly suitable for couples, friends travelling together or guests who value having their own space during the retreat.
Private accommodation upgrades are currently €100 per night for solo occupancy or €85 per person, per night when shared.
Guests also have access to the wider retreat grounds and communal spaces, including our outdoor hot showers and swimming pool.
The Huachuma Project is a rural, off-grid retreat rather than a hotel or resort. Guests should be comfortable spending time in a natural environment and moving between different areas of the property. If you have mobility, accessibility or other practical requirements that may affect your stay, please discuss these with us before confirming your place so we can explain the site and available accommodation in more detail.
How to get there
The Huachuma Project is located in the hills of the Western Algarve in Southern Portugal.
Most international guests travel through Faro International Airport, approximately one hour from the retreat by car. We can arrange a return transfer from Faro Airport for €50 per person when organised in advance.
Guests are also welcome to hire a car or travel independently. Free parking is available onsite for the duration of the retreat.
If travelling by train, the Western Algarve can be reached from both Faro and Lisbon, with Lagos and Portimão providing convenient onward connections by taxi or pre-arranged pick-up.
For guests travelling from further afield, Lisbon is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours away by car, making it another possible arrival airport if flights to Faro are not convenient.
Because The Huachuma Project is both a private retreat space and our home, we do not publish the exact address publicly. Once your participation has been confirmed, you will receive detailed directions, travel guidance and arrival information to make the final part of your journey straightforward.
If you are unsure about the best travel route, let us know before booking flights or onward transport and we will be happy to help you plan your arrival.
