Matthew Brennan, CADC-II
Bio :
As a full-time psychedelic-therapist and guide, my interest in psychedelics began in 1992 when I was first introduced to the healing power of such medicines during my years as a psychedelic music composer, DJ and record label owner in the New York City area. During that time, my creative partners and I explored non-ordinary states of consciousness in the company of groundbreaking visionary artists, sculptors and psychedelic electronic music composers from across the globe.
After years of extensive self-exploration, I made a conscious choice to re-focus my spiritual interests through non-medicinal practices. With the assistance of an incredible spiritual mentor, I spent 15 years addressing underlying PTSD, shame, anxiety, and low self-esteem through study, mindfulness, prayer, meditation and various psychotherapeutic modalities.
Though still involved with aspects of the psychedelic music culture to this day, my primary focus has shifted towards psychology, and specifically toward addiction counseling for co-occurring disorders. In 2010, I completed my education in addiction counseling from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles and have since been certified as a CADC-II with the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP).
In 2019, I completed an extensive training and certification program in clincial psychedelic-therapy and guiding at a private center in North America. Shortly after became an approved integration counselor at Innerspace Integration and Psychedelic.Support. I can also be found on the integration provider list at MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies).
My open-minded, humanistic, harm reduction counseling style is primarily guided by the holistic principles of Gestalt Therapy (in which I am trained and certified), as well as in the spirit and skills of Motivational Interviewing, and the cognitive-behavioral/relational approach of Reality Therapy/Choice Theory. During the past 10 years, I have provided extensive individual and group chemical dependency counseling to hundreds of chronically ill, co-occurring clients as well as supervised, educated and directed both credentialed and licensed clinicians at various treatment centers in the Los Angeles area. I have counseled people struggling with complex addictive behaviors and have witnessed the importance and value of the therapeutic alliance. I strongly believe in respecting and honoring my client's boundaries and always encourage my clients to empower themselves.
My training and practice with Gestalt Therapy has also provided me a strong framework for assisting clients in making sense of and bringing together the many pieces of their psychedelic puzzles into one unified, holistic experience. My approach also includes 30 years of collecting, curating, producing and DJing psychedelic, entheogenic, ambient electronic music for individual journeys and group gatherings.
Having overcome many challenges with the assistance of guides, healers, counselors, coaches, therapists, friends, and psychedelic medicines, I have shifted my perspective, released trapped emotions, and addressed unhealthy, irrational thought patterns that interrupted my well-being. I bring the wisdom I gleaned from these experiences into my work with clients, helping them find clarity, meaning, and lasting change.
VISION + MISSION
I believe in the freedom of self-exploration, self-actualization, and enlightenment through the use of psychedelics as sacred, healing medicine. I offer education, encouragement, and guidance before and after psychedelic experiences. I can help you become familiar with the history of psychedelics and how to best discern fact from fiction. We will address any fears that may arise prior to your journey as well as identify your intentions. Together we will explore methods for navigating a medicine journey and how to best integrate the insights you receive by putting into action what you learned from or during your experience. I also provide support for the integration of difficult trips or confusing visions that often occur during medicine journeys. Together we will extract valuable lessons and information to be utilized in your day-to-day life.
