My name is Alexandra Therrien, I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and currently pursuing my Doctoral Degree in Clinical Sexology with a specialization in Transgender Care from the International Institute of Clinical Sexology. I earned a Masters of Science Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Carlos Albizu University and Bachelors in Science Degree in Psychology from Nova SouthEasternUniversity. I am bilingual- proficient in English and Spanish- and as a result have the opportunity to apply my skills with a range of culturally diverse clients.
I started my career by volunteering at homeless shelters, then transitioned to work on forensic psychology helping ex-convicts to re-enter the community, I held groups and individual therapy for domestic abuse, alcohol abuse and parenting. I also had the opportunity to work with cancer patients and their families by supporting them and guiding them through that painful path of illness and recovery from cancer. Then my journey took me to helping children and families with all kinds of issues including sex abuse, schizophrenia, cerebral palsy patients, amongst others.
Due to my passion to help the most in need or those that are forgotten in our community, I decided to advocate for inmates, specifically the mentally ill, so I began to work with the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit population in a Florida prison. It was challenging but I succeeded in contributing to that population.
Since the beginning, the focus of my clinical work has been to support individuals, couples, and families on multifaceted issues including mental health, abuse/violence, stress, anxiety, depression, bereavement/grief, death/dying, and relationship issues. As a result of my journey as an advocate for change, it is my professional mission and calling to help couples, including LGBTQ community, to create positive and healthy relationships.
