In recent years, the field of mental health treatment has seen a surge of interest in psychedelic therapy as a potential breakthrough approach. One practitioner who has embraced this innovative treatment modality is Susan Gillispie, APRN, a nurse practitioner at Wholistic Health located in Mobile, Alabama. In this interview, we will delve into the world of ketamine treatment and explore Susan Gillispie’s unique approach to helping patients find healing and relief from a range of mental health issues.

Psychable: Susan, Can you share your journey with us?

Susan: After being accepted into a nurse practitioner program at Georgetown, I realized that working for a large corporation in family practice wasn’t fulfilling for me. I wanted to have more time with patients, dive deeper into their health issues, and address the root causes of their ailments. This led me to open my own practice, where I could provide individualized care and help patients achieve true health and wellness.

That's quite a journey, Susan. Can you give us an overview of the services you offer in your private practice?

In my practice, I focus on providing highly individualized care. Each patient receives a one-hour long consultation, allowing me to deeply understand their needs. Whether it’s addressing gastrointestinal issues through functional medicine or treating treatment-resistant depression on the psychiatric side, I tailor my approach to meet the unique needs of each individual.

Could you tell us about your qualifications, certifications, and training?

I have completed a 40-hour coursework with the Ketamine Institute, and I continue to stay current through additional training with the American Society of Ketamine Physicians, Psychotherapists, and Practitioners. I’m dedicated to ongoing learning and staying up to date with the latest advancements in the field.

It's clear that you're committed to lifelong learning, Susan. Can you describe your facilities and what they look like?

Our practice is designed to provide a relaxing and serene atmosphere. When patients enter, they often feel like they’re walking into a spa rather than a traditional clinic. We have comfortable seating arrangements for group sessions, and we prioritize punctuality to respect the value of our patients’ time. The fusion rooms where treatments take place are tranquil and offer a calm environment for patients to relax and receive their care.

That sounds wonderful, Susan. Can you share a success story or an example of a client who has benefited from your services?

One success story that stands out to me is a nurse who came to me struggling with severe depression. She was unable to work, get out of bed, or function properly. After undergoing treatment, her depression symptoms significantly improved. She is now back to working full time and enjoying a fulfilling life. This is just one example of many success stories we’ve witnessed, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see our patients regain their health and well-being.

It's inspiring to hear about the positive impact you've made on people's lives, Susan. Is there another client success story you'd like to share?

Another success stories involves a 16-year-old girl who was referred to us by a psychiatrist. She was struggling with severe depression and suicidal thoughts, impacting her ability to function and attend school. After undergoing a series of treatments, she experienced remarkable improvement. Now, she is thriving, attending school regularly, and enjoying life to the fullest. It’s truly incredible to witness these transformations. These are just a few ketamine success stories coming out of our clinic.

It's amazing to hear about the life-changing results your clients have experienced. What recommendations do you have for individuals who are considering seeking treatment at your center or finding the right treatment for them?

I encourage everyone to research and educate themselves about the treatment options and modalities they are considering. Take the time to watch patient experiences and listen to researchers discussing ketamine treatment on platforms like YouTube. Additionally, I provide a handbook that guides patients on how to prepare for ketamine treatment. It’s important to approach the treatment with knowledge and understanding to make informed decisions about your own health.

Your handbook sounds like a valuable resource, Susan. Can you tell us a bit more about it?

The handbook is a four-page guide that helps patients integrate ketamine treatment successfully. It covers topics such as preparing a playlist, practicing meditation, and adopting a healthy lifestyle. By setting the right conditions and intentions, patients can optimize their treatment outcomes. It’s about creating a supportive environment for healing.

That's wonderful. How do you approach the initial assessment and goal-setting process with clients to ensure personalized and effective treatment?

During the initial consultation, we dive deep into each client’s history, including family mental health and medical background. We evaluate the medications and supplements they are taking and discuss their goals for treatment. By thoroughly understanding their individual needs and expectations, we can develop a personalized protocol that aligns with their goals. It’s important to set realistic expectations and recognize that ketamine treatment is a process, not a quick fix.

Could you elaborate on what makes a good candidate for ketamine treatment?

A good candidate is someone who has already explored traditional treatment options, such as multiple medications, talk therapy, and working with psychiatrists. We typically see individuals who have tried various treatments and have not achieved the desired results. It’s important to exhaust traditional treatment options before considering ketamine treatment. We want to ensure that patients have a thorough understanding of the treatment and are committed to the process.

Collaboration seems to be a key aspect of your approach. Do you collaborate with other professionals or practitioners to provide comprehensive care for your clients?

Absolutely, I collaborate with family practitioners, psychiatrists, and specialists to provide comprehensive care for our clients. It’s essential to have a multidisciplinary approach and work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals to ensure our clients receive the most effective and holistic care possible.

It's great to hear that you prioritize a comprehensive approach to patient care. Addressing root causes is an important aspect of your work. Could you elaborate on how your practice complements and investigates root causes?

In our practice, we aim to identify and address root causes of various conditions. For example, hypothyroidism can mimic severe depressive symptoms, so we thoroughly evaluate thyroid function. We also consider vitamin deficiencies, as low levels of certain vitamins can contribute to depressive symptoms. Additionally, we utilize micronutrient testing and investigate potential nutrient imbalances. By addressing these root causes, we can provide a more comprehensive and effective approach to healing.

It's clear that you take a holistic approach to patient care, Susan. Before we wrap up, is there anything else you'd like to share with our community?

I want to emphasize the importance of doing your own research and educating yourself about the treatment options you are considering. It’s essential to have a collaborative relationship with your healthcare provider and feel empowered to ask questions. Seek multiple opinions and make sure the treatment aligns with your individual needs and goals. Remember, this is a journey, and the more informed you are, the better equipped you will be to make decisions about your own well-being.
